Nonito Donaire Wins WBA Bantamweight Crown After His Opponent Suffered Freak Injury

Nonito Donaire is a Filipino-American professional boxer. He is a multiple-time former world champion in four weight classes. Donaire is popularly known as the “Filipino Flash” due to him exceptionally fast hand speed and formidable punching power.

Recently, Donaire fought Irishman Ryan Burnett for the WBA bantamweight crown. The 35-year old Filipino boxer crowned himself a world champion again. Donaire’s opponent was unable to fight after the 4th round, after suffering a back injury, seemingly overextending his back muscle as he tried to catch the Filipino boxer with a big punch.

However, there are reports that the injury was caused by a left hook from Donaire in the 3rd round but that it manifested in 4th round.

Donaire won via technical knockout.

In the post-fight interview, Donaire said that it was not the way he wanted to win. He also expressed his hope that Burnett would fully recover soon from his freak injury.

“It’s not the way I want to win, but a win’s a win.

“He was fast, strong and caught me with some good punches…

“First off, I want to acknowledge and thank God and my Archangels for everything they put before me tonight. Next I would like to send prayers of healing to Ryan Burnett and thank him for sharing the ring with me. I know he’ll heal up and be back in the ring soon!”
